Mexicat

I shall call him Mexicat.

Shift

There has only been a few occasions where I actually used the 4x4 in my truck.  I think the last time was when it snowed in Vegas.

Encore

The Wynn and Encore are probably my favorite hotel based on design.  They both look particularly beautiful during sunrise or sunset.  I finally got a chance to swing by and take a photo from the cathedral parking lot.  Maybe instead of the inanimate objects around my house I can take photographs of casinos.  Lord knows there are plenty of them…he's got one practically in the backyard of his house.

Gas

It is getting difficult to find things to photograph while I am at work.  I think I am going to start taking photos like I did yesterday.  I'll just wake up and point it at the first thing and hopefully capture all the inanimate objects in my house.  Screw the lecture about gas prices, we all know that song.

Feet

Truth be told, this was actually a messed up picture.  Somehow my camera was activated when I pulled my iPhone out of my pocket.  Luckily enough, I did not have a picture for the day so I chose this one.  My feet look nice and manicured though.

GOT

I read up to the third book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series and took a little break from them.  Today I started back up.  Plus the weather outside was uncharacteristically nice.  Perfect for reading outside.

Base

This was the second time I went to a 51's baseball game this year.  It was dollar beer night and the beers lived up to their price.  This photo is also a little bigger than my other ones...the fisheye lens does that.

Bug

The ants are starting their annual infestation of my mimosa tree.  With them comes random bugs with eyes on the back of their heads.  I was surprised that the little guy stood still long enough for me to be able to take a photo of him.

I do not know what the use of having someone come around and spray for bugs when it is becoming futile.  I guess it just makes me feel better.  My main goal really is to not have them come into the house (they've done that) and crawl on my wife while she's sleeping (they've done that too).

Beers

I apologize for the delay.  I also apologize for my lack of actual content in the written portion of my blog.  However, I am caught up now.  I will eventually be able to continue taking unique photos to represent my day and get back to explaining them in an interesting fashion.  Now, I must drink my beer.

Pen

Seriously…school?  I always thought about going back just to keep my mind occupied.  But, I am having second thoughts now.

Eclipse

We were lucky enough to see the eclipse here in Las Vegas.  An image of the eclipse can be seen in the right of the picture caused by the lens from my iPhone.  My wife adapted to the predicament of not being able to look at the sun by putting on two pairs of sunglasses.  I wish I had a photo of that.  I enjoy this photo because it captures an actual event that occurred on the stated date.

Gabf

So, as I mentioned a few days ago, I've been attending a class.  I'm going to give a presentation on brewing beer.  It'll be pretty easy for me.  This is a little something I made with malt extract and some hops.  I put it into the cup we used when we were getting our samples at the GABF.

Water

My wife and I went to Settebello again.  I seem to have a theme going that has to do with water and heat.  I'm probably telling myself something.

Photo 1

So, I've been attending a class for my work.  It severly limits the amount of photos I can take.  This is my view in the morning when I wake up.  I am not a morning person.  Cold water splashed on the face followed by a warm shower usually does the trick of waking me up.

Photo

I see these pictures here a lot, living in the desert.  Friends like to take photographs of their car's thermometer or the outside one.  Yes.  I get it.  It's hot in Las Vegas.

I'm still here!

Exclamation mark I am still taking photos everyday.  I am just very busy with work this week, so it is hard for me to focus on my posts for the day.  I'll start posting my pictures soon though!  Is anyone out there doing something similar?  Taking a photo everyday?

May 15, 2012

Mimosa

I sure do love trees.  I've posted a picture of this tree earlier but did not really talk about the tree itself.  This is a type of tree widely known as a "Mimosa Tree."  The flowers on the tree smell similar to peaches, lychee, or other sweet smelling fruit.  Apparently it was used as an ornamental tree and became an invasive species in America.  The tree does show off its invasiveness by blocking my escape from the garage with its low hanging branches.  This gives me the great pleasure of hitting a branch with the roof of my truck every time I back out.  It is "ornamental" though.

Bio

I found this on the wall at my work and thought it was funny.  I don't know what kind of biohazard exists beyond the walls of work besides boogers and shit.  It is kind though.  That thoughtful unknown person may have prevented tragedy by making people aware of the dangers that exist on the inside.

May 13, 2012

Venus

I have mentioned my garage art before.  I will eventually take photos of everything in there…'cause they are just cool.  We had a poster of The Birth Of Venus by Botticelli sitting around and I decided to put it in the garage.  I am not going to discuss the work itself.  There are tons of movies and books out that do that.  I will talk about how it gives the garage a nice sophistication.  Granted, I have various other forms of hanging things strewn about the garage.  But, this adds a niceness.  It tells me to take time to stop and pause for a second before getting into my truck.

May 12, 2012

Ducks

I am surprised I have not talked about my wife's collection of rubber ducks.  There is a bathroom in the house that is devoted to rubber ducks.  The majority of them are the Devil Ducks in their various states of duckness.  There are zombie ones, hippie ones, clear ones, and blue ones.  That's just naming the few on the counter.

We all have our collections of things.  I just hope it doesn't get out of hand.  I don't want to be hanging around when plastic somehow finds a way to form in to some biological body and begins to squeak around the house trying to attack us.  Well, at least one duck glows in the dark.

Alee

Yeah, so I have dolls in my house…so what?  I also have holiday decorations still up.  There is a shelve in the kitchen that has a halloween pumpkin, a leprechaun, and the thanksgiving doll.  It's a nice way to provide a little "holiday cheer" year round.

May 10, 2012

Treeflower

I've talked about the tree in my backyard before.  I haven't talked about the flowers that the tree produces.  The olloclip lens that I got for my iPhone makes it easy for me to get up close to smaller objects.  So, here is that flower.  I have yet to figure out what kind of tree it is.

Mead

I finally got around to racking my mead into a secondary fermenter.

Sorry.  Let me explain.

Basically when mead is made, yeast eat up the sugar that the honey provides. At its simplest form mead is honey, water, and yeast.  The beginnings of that combination is called "must."  The must is put into a vessel (usually a 5 gallon bucket) to ferment.  This is primary fermentation.  Once the action of fermentation is slowed (meaning all the sugar is basically munched on by the yeast) the liquid is transferred to another vessel to help clarify and age.  This could take months or even years.  That is why there is a date on the bottle (also giving the photo the unique distinction of exemplifying itself as being taken on the date that it is presented.)

Cubs

As mentioned previously, I'm a fan of the Chicago Cubs.  When WGN was broadcasted across the nation, Las Vegas was one of the cities that received the channel.  WGN was one of the few channels that had a single baseball team play day in and day out so it was easy for me to choose them as my baseball team.  I got to see Sandberg and Grace play everyday!

It also helped since my mother was already fan.  The story goes that my mom was pregnant with me and since there was not much to watch on the television she watched WGN and the Cubbies.  As a result, a third generation born Las Vegan became a Chicago Cubs fan.

Shadow

I wish I could muster up some existentialist babble about the existence of self in relation to the shadow that is cast.  Then the explanation for the photo would be much more interesting.  But, in reality I almost missed taking my photo!  It was 10pm when I realized I had not taken a photo for the day.  I stood staring at my shadow and the photo was born.  It was in a random parking lot where I was working (BSing) with work buddies.  The lights were very bright and cast the right kind of shadow to be photographed.

Vegas Palm

I am still in that vacation haze.  It doesn't help that the palm trees look the same when backdropped by a clear blue sky.  It also doesn't help that there is an overabundance of palm trees in the desert.

Las Vegas is also known as Hawaii's 9th island so there are plenty of Hawaiian related restaurants and activities to go to.  There are even ABC stores in Vegas…so I can get my fill of chocolate covered macadamia nuts.  If I go to downtown Las Vegas I can be treated to a variety of Hawaiian related treats and music and even mingle with the "locals" from the islands. Alas...it is still not vacation.

Caps

I like to collect bottle caps.  Someday, I plan to use them in a project of sorts.  I've collected them over many years and I have more than enough to complete any type of craft I set my eyes on.

My mind is still in a daze after coming back from vacation.  Luckily, I  did not have anything of importance to do the past few days.  Usually, I take a day or two off after vacation.  This time I did it backwards and took the few days off prior.  Oh well.  By the time I get all settled it will be time to take another trip.

SadPlant

I do not have a green thumb.  Well, it is somewhat difficult to take care of a plant when I am 3,000 miles away.  My sorry Peace Lilly was perky and vibrant when I left.  I am feeding the necessary nutrients and hope that it will be just as perky as before.

I have also finally caught up with all of my posts!  Now, I can take my small vacation from my vacation!

Viewonlastday

The view from the hotel room on the last day of vacation.  The last day…Glad to be heading home and sad to be doing so.  Overall, I would recommend a visit to Maui and encourage folks that do so to jump out of the resort areas and see what's out there.  My wife and I discovered many little eat spots that were recommended to us by locals.  It was also neat to see the diversity of plant life that is crammed into the island.  I will be coming back to Maui.

Coffee

My theme every few days.  I need this cup today…maybe two.

April 30, 2012

Zip

Zipline!  We took a zipline through a forest of trees that are not indigenous to Maui.  It was everything I thought it would be, just like the South Park episode.

The people that ran the place were actually very cool.  One guy, despite his side job as a zip master, went to every single state and planted a tree that was actually indigenous to the locale.  He plans on making it into a documentary.  I mentioned the trees we were zip lining through.  Those were planted by folks sometime at the turn of last century to help prevent erosion.

Snorkle

I have never swam so much.  I think I feel I have to.  There is this large natural swimming pool being offered to me so I must see what it offers!  Luckily, on one of my excursions I saw a large sea turtle slowly moving along giving me the slightest bit of attention before he slipped deeper down into the ocean.

Fern

I like to experience a place I travel to by hiking when I can.  I read about the Waihee Ridge Trail and saw that it received a lot of positive reviews so I choose the trail for the hike.  The trail starts off near some sleeping cows in a small field and has a serious incline.  Eventually it leads past some of the strangest trees and plants that I have seen.  Once on the ridge I was treated to a beautiful view of Kahului and the valley leading into the mountains.  Unfortunately, once we were close to the top we were surrounded by clouds.  Which was actually kind of cool but the view suffered.  While walking the trail I noticed thousands of fiddlehead ferns poking out of the forest floor.  In Maui the locals call the fern Pohole.  When the shoot is still young they pick them and use them in a variety of recipes.  I had the chance to try some and I was pleasantly surprised at the taste.  This little guy was almost four foot tall and was desperately reaching for the sun so that it can provide its tasty little shoots.

Hana

Today we took a Road to Hana tour that had someone else driving us.  The road is often called the "Divorce Highway," and since we wanted to continue our relationship my wife and I thought it was in our best interests to take the tour instead.  It is very easy to take an island for granted.  The seemingly short distance around the island can actually take all day due to road conditions.  The trip was beautiful though and my wife and I avoided divorce…for the most part.  I like to take pictures of her because, she is my wife.  My wife on the other hand thinks that no photo evidence of her on vacation should exist.BlackSand

I wanted another sand picture.  This one is on the black sand beaches of Honokalani.
